About 5 weeks ago I started my own dental research project. I had not been to the dentist in too long due to insurance changes and then had to visit a new provider who tried to up sell me, didn't win my trust and then told me I had periodontal disease and had to undergo deep cleaning with numbing. I said I wanted to check with my former dentist because I knew I'd had a deep cleaning there and didn't get numbed. I am a BIG skeptic in dentist offices and was turned off by many things prior to that news. (forms, pictures on the walls, set up of office, hygienist ...I could go on) I did like the dentist but too many other strikes.
So, I decided to go back to my
old dentist and pay out of network expense. I LOVE them and trust them totally. In the 5 weeks between visits, I purchased a
Sonicare toothbrush and used it at least once daily and also flossed and rinsed with Listerine religiously.
Well, my little experiment paid off and my gums were fine- only 2 #4's which they can watch and think will reverse with my new habits above and were fine with only a water cleaning which I prefer to the chisel method (not the official name, I'm sure) In the first appointment, prior to my habit changes, I was a lot of #4's and 5's with gums bleeding like crazy. My dentist did say that some hygienists push too hard on the gums and get high readings. I wonder if that was the case because I was bleeding on almost every measurement she took and needless to say pretty fed up by the time I got out of the office. AND, they didn't even clean my teeth. Super irritating since I had childcare arranged, etc.
SO, I'm sticking with my new routine and my old dentist!!
